More about Chris Harris of TweedsMarine

I’m a marine electronics engineer based in Nelson, New Zealand, with over 40 years of experience in the telecommunications and marine electronics engineering industries. My passion for boats, yachts, and anything that floats began in my youth, and I’ve combined that lifelong interest with professional expertise in marine electronics installation, design, and troubleshooting.

Before transitioning to marine electronics engineering, I trained as a telecommunications engineer, spending two decades in that field. I then took a break to pursue my passion for sailing, which led to nearly 20 years of hands-on experience in the marine industry, working with vessels of all sizes—from small yachts to large expedition support yachts and fishing vessels of all sizes. I’ve sailed extensively in high-latitude waters (mostly Antarctica and sub-Antarctic islands) and learned what it takes to keep a boat running smoothly for months at a time, far from home ports.

Each article is written to provide valuable marine electronics advice to enhance your boating experience.

After years of global cruising in my boat, I’ve spent the last decade in New Zealand, focusing on marine electronics systems for commercial and recreational vessels. My work has primarily involved installing and maintaining marine electronics on fishing boats, but I continue to stay active with yachts, from small trailer-sailers to superyachts.

I’m passionate about providing marine electronics guidance, and helping boat owners achieve the best in reliable and simple marine systems. I specialise in sailing instruments, navigation systems, radar installations, fish finders, battery management, and onboard communication systems like VHF, HF radios, and modern satellite communication technologies such as Starlink and OneWeb. My approach emphasises simplicity, reliability, and practical solutions—not gimmicks.

Though I’m no longer spending all my time crawling around in boats fiddling with wires, I’m always happy to discuss design, installation, and specification advice for your marine electronics projects. With a focus on cost-effective, efficient, and reliable networking for all your devices, I aim to help you create a seamless and dependable system onboard your boat or yacht.
